It was a day away from school that the children of Endike Academy will never forget.

Swapping the classroom for the KCOM Stadium, a class full of pupils took part in a Run With It day, a one-off learning enrichment experience.

Sponsored by Sewell Facilities Management, the children spent time in the stadium’s Education Centre in December, taking part in lively numeracy and literacy tasks, as well as problem-solving activities, while working in pairs, small groups and teams.

Employment and skills opportunities were also part of the day’s programmes, and the pupils were able to have a rare behind the scenes glimpse of the stadium.

Jess Fenton, Year 5 Class Teacher at Endike Academy, said: “Everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable day from start to finish.

“All the staff were enthusiastic and motivating for the children, meaning every child was engaged right throughout the day.

“The range of facts presented throughout the tour kept both the children and the staff entertained.”

The children spent time in the Hull City and Hull FC shops at the stadium, calculating percentages and measurements.

Martin Stead, Managing Director of Sewell Facilities Management, said: “The children were given a tour and told various facts about the stadium and what goes on there. It was fun and in an exciting place, so it wasn’t obvious they were learning.

“They also took part in a quiz to see what they had learnt on the tour that morning.

“It was a fantastic experience in a completely different environment, with education and learning at the heart of the day. We are really pleased to back such a great initiative.”

Lisa Dawson, who managed the Run With It day, said: “It’s good for us to network with the local business community and schools.

“Gaining the sponsorship from a local businesses opens the door for schools to sample these activities and gives them experience in key areas which are useful for their future.

“We asked the young people if they had visited the KCOM Stadium before and three quarters of them hadn’t, so it was a fantastic experience for them.”
